Nintendo 64 non oem reprodction Yoshi's Story video game cartridge.
Released in 1998, Yoshi's Story for the Nintendo 64 is a 2D side-scrolling platformer presented as a living pop-up storybook. After Baby Bowser steals the Super Happy Tree and transforms Yoshi's Island into a book, players must lead a team of six differently colored baby Yoshis to reclaim the tree and restore happiness.
Core Gameplay & Mechanics
- Fruit Collection Goal: Unlike traditional platformers with a finish line, you clear a stage by eating 30 pieces of fruit scattered throughout the level.
- Health & Happiness: Yoshi's health is shown by a smiling flower; it wilts as you take damage and is replenished by eating fruit.
- Signature Moves: Players use Yoshi's iconic flutter jump, ground pound, and egg-throwing mechanics. New to this entry, you can aim eggs and stick out Yoshi’s tongue in any direction using the analog stick.
- Non-Linear Progression: The game consists of six worlds ("Pages"), each with four different stages. A single playthrough only requires finishing one stage per world, meaning you only play six levels total to reach the end.
- Unlocking Levels: To access different levels in subsequent worlds, you must find Special Hearts hidden in the current stage.
Visuals & Presentation
The game is widely recognized for its unique "crafted" aesthetic, with environments designed to look like they are made from denim, cardboard, fabrics, plastic, and wood. It was the first time Yoshi’s iconic voice (provided by Kazumi Totaka) was used in a game.
Key Features
- Multiple Yoshis: You start with six colors (Green, Light Blue, Blue, Yellow, Red, Pink). If a Yoshi's health is depleted, they are captured by Baby Bowser's minions and become unavailable for the rest of the game.
- Secret Yoshis: Players can discover eggs that hatch the Black and White Yoshis, who have higher health replenishment from all fruit types.
- Modes: Includes Story Mode for the main campaign, Trial Mode for replaying cleared levels for high scores, and a Practice Mode for learning controls.
