Released in 1991, Yoshi (known as Mario & Yoshi in PAL regions) is a falling-block puzzle game for the Game Boy. Developed by Game Freak, it task players with clearing stacks of classic Super Mario enemies, such as Goombas and Boos, before they reach the top of the screen.

Core Gameplay

Unlike Tetris, where you move the falling pieces, in Yoshi, you control Mario at the bottom of the screen.

  • Tray Swapping: Mario holds trays under four columns; you must swap the trays to catch and rearrange falling enemies.
  • Clearing Enemies: Stacking two identical monsters on top of each other causes them to disappear.
  • Hatching Yoshis: Periodically, bottom and top eggshell halves will fall. If you sandwich a stack of enemies between a bottom and top shell, they are cleared, a Yoshi hatches, and you earn bonus points based on how many enemies were trapped.

Game Modes

  • A-Type: An endless mode focused on reaching the highest score possible as the falling speed increases.
  • B-Type: A series of levels where the goal is to clear a set number of blocks to progress through short cutscenes.
  • 2-Player Mode: A competitive mode where clearing blocks or hatching Yoshis sends "garbage" to the opponent's screen.
