Nintendo 64 non oem reprodction Turok Rage Wars video game cartridge.

Turok: Rage Wars for the Nintendo 64 is a multiplayer-centric first-person shooter (FPS) released in 1999 that functions as a non-canon spin-off to the main Turok series. Heavily inspired by arena-based shooters like Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament, the game shifts focus away from the exploration-heavy campaigns of its predecessors toward fast-paced, competitive deathmatches.

Core Gameplay Features

  • Arena Combat: Players compete in 36 unique arenas featuring convoluted tunnels, sniper nests, and significant verticality.
  • Custom Arsenals: Instead of finding weapons in-map, players pre-select a loadout of six weapons (one melee, two bullet, one explosive, and two energy).
  • Dual Firing Modes: Every weapon includes a secondary firing mode, adding strategic depth to combat.
  • Diverse Roster: You can play as up to 17 characters from the Turok universe, including Tal'Set, Adon, and even a Velociraptor that uses claws instead of guns.

Game Modes

  • Multiplayer: Supports up to four players via split-screen.
    • Bloodlust / Team Bloodlust: Classic deathmatch and team-based modes.
    • Capture the Flag: A one-flag variant where players must return the flag to their base.
    • Frag Tag (Monkey Tag): A random player is turned into a monkey; others must hunt them for points.
  • Single-Player Trials: A ladder-style competition against AI-controlled bots used to unlock new characters and health upgrades.
  • Two-Player Cooperative Trials: Allows two players to progress through the mission-based mode together.

Key Technical Details

  • Developer/Publisher: Developed by Acclaim Studios Austin and published by Acclaim Entertainment.
  • Hardware Support: Supports the N64 Expansion Pak for high-resolution graphics, though it is not required for play.
  • The "Grey Cartridge" Variant: Original North American black cartridges suffered from a game-breaking glitch in the two-player trials. Acclaim issued corrected grey cartridges to those who reported the issue, making the Grey Variant a rare collector's item.
