Released in 2001, Tomb Raider: Curse of the Sword is a 2D side-scrolling action-adventure game for the Game Boy Color. As a direct sequel to the first handheld Tomb Raider title, it shifts Lara Croft's adventures from ancient ruins to more urban settings.
Plot & Storyline
The story begins in a New York museum where Lara Croft witnesses the theft of the Sword of Paveaux, a powerful artifact rumored to have the ability to revive the dead. During the confrontation, Lara is accidentally cut by the blade. This "marks" her as the intended vessel for the soul of Madame Paveau, an evil magician from the past. Lara must track down the cult responsible through various global locations to save her own soul.
Gameplay Features
- Methodical Action: Unlike high-speed reflex games, this title uses a "deliberate" control system where you must plan movements carefully, similar to the original Prince of Persia.
- Diverse Environments: Players navigate through five large areas, including New York rooftops, subway systems, New Orleans swamplands, and Bermuda.
- Lara’s Move Set: Features dozens of animations, including running, jumping, ledge-grabbing, rolling, and even performing handstands.
- Combat & Items: Lara utilizes her trademark dual pistols, as well as Uzis and shotguns. Puzzle-solving is heavily integrated, requiring players to find keys, artifacts, and rechargeable batteries to progress.
- Unique Activities: This entry introduces activities like piloting a submarine, handling demolitions, and fighting specific boss characters like the cult leader.
