ToeJam & Earl is a landmark 1991 roguelike action video game developed by Johnson Voorsanger Productions and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console. Heavily influenced by the 1980 classic Rogue, the game stood out for its unique blend of top-down exploration, 1990s urban hip-hop culture parody, and a legendary, bass-heavy funk soundtrack.

The Story

The plot centers on two alien rappers from the planet Funkotron:

  • ToeJam: A skinny, red, three-legged extraterrestrial wearing a large gold chain.
  • Big Earl: A large, yellow alien sporting polka-dot shorts.

While cruising the galaxy, Earl takes the wheel of their Righteous Rapmaster Rocketship, accidentally crashes into an asteroid, and crash-lands on a bizarre, floating-island version of planet Earth. To get back home, they must search through up to 25 vertical, stacked levels to find 10 scattered pieces of their wrecked spacecraft.

Gameplay Mechanics

  • Exploration: Players wander through layers of floating islands, avoiding hostile, eccentric Earthlings.
  • Two Play Modes: The game features a "Fixed World" mode (identical maps every play) and a "Random World" mode utilizing random generation.
  • Character Perks: ToeJam moves faster but has less health; Earl moves slower but features a larger life bar.
  • Mystery Presents: Power-ups are collected as wrapped presents. Opening them is a gamble; they may grant helpful perks like Rocket Skates or Icarus Wings, or deliver setbacks like a swarm of bees.

Cooperative Multiplayer

A major hallmark of ToeJam & Earl is its revolutionary split-screen cooperative mode. Two players start on a single screen, but if they walk away from each other, the view seamlessly splits into two separate horizontal screens so both can explore independently.

Earthling Enemies

The duo must outsmart a parody cast of crazed Earthlings, including:

  • Nerd Herds
  • Crazed Dentists
  • Phantom Ice Cream Trucks
  • Rocket-powered Hamsters
