SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron is a single-player 2D side-scrolling action platformer released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in August 1995. Developed by AIM and published by Hudson Soft, the game is a direct adaptation of the cult-classic Hanna-Barbera animated series that aired from 1993 to 1994.
Game Synopsis & Story
The game takes place in Megakat City, where players take control of Chance "T-Bone" Furlong and Jake "Razor" Clawson. Unfairly discharged from the city's paramilitary law enforcement agency, they operate as underground vigilante mechanics. When Mayor Manx issues urgent alerts about prison breaks and villain sightings, the SWAT Kats jump into action. The narrative unfolds across five distinct worlds modeled directly after episodes of the cartoon, culminating in a final showdown against Dark Kat to rescue Callie Briggs.
Core Gameplay Mechanics
- Playable Characters: Players can swap characters before starting a world. The two heroes feature distinct physical and combat advantages:
- T-Bone: The powerhouse character who boasts higher defense and heavy attack damage. He utilizes a bazooka capable of blowing apart destructible walls and obstacles.
- Razor: The agile character who jumps significantly higher than T-Bone. He is equipped with a jetpack that offers superior vertical mobility.
- RPG Leveling System: Uniquely for a licensed platformer of its era, the game incorporates an RPG-style progression system. Players collect question-mark coins to gain experience points (ranging from level 0 to 99). Leveling up permanently increases maximum HP and upgrades the damage, range, and ammo variants of the Glovatrix weapon.
- Mode 7 Flight Sequences: Worlds 1, 3, and 5 shake up the traditional 2D side-scrolling format by introducing pseudo-3D, third-person flying levels. In these segments, players pilot the signature Turbokat Fighter jet utilizing the SNES's native Mode 7 graphical capabilities.
- Level Select & Saves: Players can tackle the game's initial scenarios in any order they choose. Progress is preserved using a built-in password save system.
Stages & Iconic Bosses
The campaign features 5 main worlds, each guarded by an iconic antagonist from the cartoon:
- Dr. Viper: A bio-terrorist attacking the city with giant weaponized bacteria.
- Madkat: A chaotic jester luring victims into a deadly amusement park called "Madkat Land".
- Pastmaster: A time-traveling threat who teleports the heroes into a medieval iteration of Megalith City.
- The Metallikats: A husband-and-wife duo of cybernetic robots pulling off a massive bank heist.
- Dark Kat: The main overarching mastermind behind the kidnapping of Deputy Mayor Callie Briggs.
