Sega Genesis/Mega Drive non oem reprodction Sonic the Hedgehog 3 video game cartridge.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a landmark 1994 2D platforming video game developed by the Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console. The game picks up immediately after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, following Sonic and Tails as they travel to the floating Angel Island to prevent Doctor Robotnik from relaunching his infamous space station, the Death Egg.

Official Gameplay Description

According to original Sega retail descriptions, players must "swing from vines, launch new attacks, survive deadly traps, and summon Tails to airlift Sonic out of danger". The game features massive, multi-layered Zones packed with hidden rooms, bonus stages, and alternating pathways that reward exploration. By gathering the Chaos Emeralds in the pseudo-3D "Blue Spheres" special stages, players can transform into Super Sonic to unleash ultimate speed and invincibility.

Key Features and Mechanics

  • Introduction of Knuckles: The game marks the historic debut of Knuckles the Echidna, the stubborn guardian of Angel Island who is tricked by Dr. Robotnik into hindering Sonic and Tails.
  • Enhanced Character Abilities: Tails can now actively fly under player control to carry Sonic to hard-to-reach locations. Sonic gains the "Insta-Shield" move, giving him a brief window of extended attack radius and invincibility.
  • Elemental Shields: Sonic 3 replaces the standard shield with three distinct power-ups:
    • Flame Shield: Grants immunity to fire and unlocks a fiery forward-dash attack.
    • Water Shield: Allows breathing underwater indefinitely and enables a vertical bounce attack.
    • Lightning Shield: Magnetic property automatically pulls in nearby rings and grants a mid-air double jump.
  • Game Save Feature: Unlike previous iterations, the cartridge features an onboard battery backup, allowing players to save their progress across multiple files.
  • The "Lock-On" Split: Due to time constraints and cartridge storage limitations, Sega split the massive game into two halves. While Sonic 3 stands on its own, it was designed to connect physically with its immediate sequel cartridge via "Lock-On Technology" to form the complete experience: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.
