Onimusha Tactics is a 2003 tactical role-playing game developed and published by Capcom for the Game Boy Advance. It is a spin-off of the popular Onimusha series and the first to appear on a Nintendo console. Unlike the main series, which focuses on action-oriented gameplay, this title utilizes turn-based combat on a gridded, isometric battlefield.

Plot and Setting

Set during a fictionalized Sengoku period in Japan, the story is a side tale that does not directly follow the events of the PlayStation 2 titles.

  • Protagonist: Players control Onimaru, a young warrior of the Ogre Clan who inherits the power of the Oni Gauntlet.
  • The Threat: Onimaru must assemble a band of warriors to stop the demon-lord Nobunaga Oda and his army of undead Genma.
  • Allies: The game features a wide cast of unique characters, including Onimaru's sister Oboro, and returning series figures like Saika Magoichi and Akechi Mitsuhide.

Gameplay Mechanics

The game is often compared to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance due to its visual style, though it has several unique mechanics.

  • Turn-Based Combat: Battles occur on a perspective grid where players manage turn order based on character speed and strategic positioning.
  • Soul Absorption: Similar to the main series, Onimaru can use his gauntlet to absorb the souls of fallen Genma, which are used as a resource for enhancing weapons and armor.
  • Item Creation: Instead of traditional shops, players collect Genma Stones and find "recipes" to craft and fuse new equipment.
  • Issen Technique: A series staple, this counter-attack randomly allows a character to instantly kill an attacking foe and earn a large number of souls.
  • Phantom Realm: Between story episodes, players can enter this phantasmal plane to grind for experience and items through waves of enemies.
