Mario Golf for the Game Boy Color (GBC), released in October 1999, is a hybrid sports and role-playing game developed by Camelot Software Planning. Unlike its Nintendo 64 counterpart, it emphasizes a deep single-player "Adventure Mode" where you train an aspiring golfer to eventually challenge Mario, the "greatest golfer of all".
Core Gameplay Mechanics
The game utilizes a classic three-click shot system to control power and accuracy:
- First Click: Starts the power meter.
- Second Click: Sets the desired shot distance/power.
- Third Click: Determines accuracy by stopping the bar in the "sweet spot."
- Environmental Factors: Players must account for wind speed/direction (indicated by a Boo), rain, and course topography when aiming.
RPG Elements & Story Mode
The standout feature of the GBC version is its RPG-style progression:
- Character Development: You choose from four human characters (Kid, Sherry, Joe, or Azalea) and gain experience points by completing rounds and tournaments.
- Stat Customization: Leveling up allows you to improve specific attributes such as Drive distance, Meet Area (accuracy), Control, and Spin.
- Exploration: You can freely walk around clubhouses and practice ranges, interacting with NPCs for tips or mini-game challenges.
Game Features & Modes
- Four 18-Hole Courses: Players progress through the Marion, Palm, Dune, and Links clubs.
- Variety of Modes: Includes Tournament, Match Play, Stroke Play, Practice, and Training challenges.
- N64 Connectivity: Using a Transfer Pak, players could upload their custom GBC characters to play them in 3D on the N64 version of the game.
- Multiplayer: Supports 1–2 players via the Game Boy Link Cable.
