Gauntlet Legends for the Nintendo 64 (released in 1999) is a 3D hack-and-slash RPG and a sequel to the classic arcade hits Gauntlet and Gauntlet II. It is best known for its iconic four-player cooperative gameplay, which allows a group of friends to battle through diverse fantasy realms together.
Core Gameplay & Story
The game centers on a quest to defeat the demon lord Skorne, who was accidentally released by a corrupt mage named Garm. To reach Skorne, players must explore seven kingdoms to collect 13 hidden Runestones and activate magical obelisks.
- Characters: Choose from four classic classes: Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, and Archer (the latter replacing the Elf from earlier games). Five additional hidden characters can be unlocked through gameplay.
- RPG Progression: Characters earn experience by defeating hordes of enemies and finding treasure, allowing them to level up (max level 99) and improve four main attributes: Strength, Speed, Armor, and Magic.
- Combat: Features simple "button-mashing" combat where players use projectiles and hand-to-hand attacks to clear screen-filling swarms of monsters and their spawning generators.
N64 Specific Features
The Nintendo 64 version was the first home console port and includes unique technical requirements and design choices:
- Expansion Pak Support: While it supports up to three players with a standard Jumper Pak, a Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak is required for full four-player action.
- Inventory System: This version introduced an inventory management system, allowing players to save power-ups (like fire breath or triple shots) for later use, rather than having them activate immediately upon pickup.
- Exclusive Content: It features three worlds not seen in the original arcade version, expanding the game to a total of seven kingdoms.
- Saving Progress: Players must use a Controller Pak to save their character stats and progress.
