Released in 2001, Dragon Warrior III for the Game Boy Color (GBC) is an enhanced portable remake of the 1988 NES classic. It serves as a prequel to the first two games in the series and is the final chapter of the Erdrick Trilogy.

Plot & Story

  • The Hero’s Destiny: On your 16th birthday, you are summoned by the King of Aliahan to complete the quest of your father, the legendary warrior Ortega.
  • Main Objective: Travel across a massive world to defeat the Archfiend Baramos and save the world from destruction.
  • A Familiar World: The world map is designed to resemble Earth, with areas based on real-world locations like Italy.

Core Gameplay Features

  • Customizable Party: Unlike previous entries, you build your own team of four characters at Ruida's Tavern.
  • Vocation System: Choose from nine character classes, including Hero, Warrior, Cleric, Mage, Fighter, Thief (new to this version), Merchant, Gadabout (Goof-Off), and the powerful Sage.
  • Class Changing: At the Shrine of Dharma, characters can change jobs, resetting to Level 1 while retaining their learned spells.
  • Day/Night Cycle: Introduced for the first time in the series, the world changes in real-time, affecting monster spawns, NPC dialogue, and access to certain towns.

GBC-Specific Enhancements

  • Personality System: At the start of the game, a series of questions and a short scenario determine your Hero's personality, which dictates how their stats grow over time.
  • Animated Battles: Combat features full attack animations for every enemy, a feature brought over from the Japan-only Super Famicom remake.
  • Monster Medals: Defeated enemies sometimes drop Bronze, Silver, or Gold medals. These can be traded via a Game Link Cable to complete a collection.
  • Bonus Content: Includes two exclusive post-game dungeons—the Zenith Castle area and the Ice Cave—plus "Treasures 'n' Trapdoors" (Pachisi) board games for rewards.
  • Quick Save: A "temporary save" feature allows you to save your progress anywhere in the field.
